PROBLEM:
I've noticed small pits on the face of my brick. In each pit is a white spot. What is this?
DESCRIPTION:
A phenomenon that sometimes occurs with new bricks is lime pops. Lime pops are caused by small particles of lime that are located near the surface of the brick. When the brick absorbs moisture, the lime particles swell and cause portions of the brick face to "pop" off. The result are small pits in the surface of the brick with a white spot in the center. The white spot is the lime particle. The picture below is an example of lime popping.

SOLUTION:
This occurrence is not uncommon. It is strictly an aesthetic issue and will not affect the structural integrity of the brick.
