QUESTION
I am restoring an old parking garage. There are many years of carbon buildup from exhaust and what appears to be some concrete residue on the brick. The residue may be from the moisture coming down the wall from the upper floors. Can this be cleaned? We are enclosing in this area and also would like to know what treatments would be recommended for both the exterior and the interior brick.

SOLUTION:

The picture above shows a brick wall that was cleaned using two different approaches.

The cleaned area on the left side was cleaned with PROSOCO Restoration Cleaner in concentrate. Two applications and a pressure rinse of about 2000 lbs were used.

The right side was cleaned with PROSOCO Heavy Duty Restoration Cleaner at a dilution of 1 part cleaner to 4 parts water. Two applications, a 3 minute dwell time and a pressure rinse of about 2000 lbs were used. A solution of PROSOCO Limestone Restorer at a dilution of 1 part cleaner to 4 parts water was then applied and let dwell for 3 minutes. Two applications were performed. This seemed to work the best.

A treatment of Prosoco Weather Seal H40 would help to preserve both the mortar and the brick on the interior of structure. The exterior could be treated with the same material if needed but if in good shape you could use Weather Seal PD as well.

Remember to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for safety and always do a small test area before applying the solution to the entire area.
