PROBLEM:
My white brick has turned a greenish-brown and, in some places, purple color. What is happening? What can I do to correct this?
DESCRIPTION:
The stains on your brick are a trace mineral found in some clays. This trace mineral is a vanadium salt and it has migrated to the surface of your brick via moisture. The stain is most prevalent after new construction clean-down, especially if muratic acid is used. Sometimes the stains will reappear under extremely damp conditions. The pictures below are examples of vanadium staining.
