My new house has a yellow-gold color on some of the brick and mortar. What is it?
The color that you are seeing could possible be acid burn. This is caused by improper use of the cleaning agent that was used to clean your home. If not mixed correctly, rinsed thoroughly or used properly, a stain can be left on the brick and mortar. Some examples of acid burn are shown in the pictures below. Pictures A and B show the effects of acid burn on bricks. Picture C shows the affects of acid burn on mortar.
Acid burn can be cleaned off with SURE KLEAN 800 stain remover as manufactured by PROSOCO. Cleaner must be used as per the manufacturer's recommendations.

Always test the solution on a small test panel.
